The demands of government employees at the Bangladesh Secretariat, including the repeal of the Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, will be addressed after Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus returns to the country, according to Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid.
On Wednesday morning, Land Secretary Salauddin and six other secretaries informed the Cabinet Secretary of the employees’ concerns. Following the meeting, the Land Secretary conveyed that a final decision would be made upon the Chief Adviser’s return.
In response to the update from the highest level of administration, the leaders of the Secretariat Officers and Employees Coordination Council convened to determine their next course of action, according to Council Leader Nizamuddin Ahmed.
Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus is currently in Japan, attending the Nikkei Forum’s “Future of Asia” conference and is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. He is expected to return to Bangladesh on May 31.
Earlier on Tuesday, May 27, a meeting was held at the Land Ministry between the movement’s representatives and top government officials, including five secretaries and chaired by Land Secretary ASM Saleh Ahmed.
The session included leaders from various employee associations involved in the ongoing demonstrations.
Following discussions, the employee representatives agreed to suspend their protest programs until 10 a.m. Wednesday to allow for formal communication of their demands to the Cabinet Secretary and to facilitate further dialogue.
Commenting on the meeting, Land Secretary Saleh Ahmed stated, “We, as fellow government employees, listened to their concerns. The government has passed a law, and they feel aggrieved by it. They want it repealed. We have taken note of their demands and presented them to the Cabinet Secretary. The government will take the next step.”
